Mud sticks

I don’t need to tell you that there are many social media platforms, but when it comes to your career development being active on social media can have its pros and cons. Whilst social media can help you seek opinion, seek information or allow you to reach many people when trying to share information, like “we are running a workshop, who is interested?”, it can also be detrimental to your profile. Posting comments stick. Comments that are not based on evidence, are not intended to inform and educate, comments that are derogatory, or come from a place of privilege can impact on your career more than you think.

More and more employers are undertaking complete profile checks across all platforms on potential employees. Professional platforms are not the only platforms they search. Replying to a comment from your personal account to a comment that may unravel you is also visible. I’m not suggesting that you should stay silent, not comment on issues that affect you. I’m suggesting that you think before you hit that keyboard, think of your tone, your choice of words, the evidence, the time of day you are posting and most importantly, the platform you are posting on. Mud sticks, good and bad.
